Weight Loss Clinic

Obesity in the UK pet population has increased in the last decade for various reasons including both the development of 'gourmet' diets for pets and also decreased leisure time for owners to exercise their animals due to increased work demands.

Obesity in animals can have surprising effects on the health of the individual. For example we all know that carrying too much weight can increase one's blood pressure and the risk of heart disease but also in dogs and cats it increases the chances of skin disease being problematic as well as the prevalence of diabetes, arthritis and breathing difficulties.

Weighty issues?

In other words our pets will live longer and have a happier lifestyle if they remain at an ideal weight.

We have had great success recently in implementing a weight loss programme for many of the dogs and cats that come into our surgeries.

These clinics involve monthly visits to our surgery for a 'weigh in' and also for measurement to be taken to allow us to monitor progress and to adjust the programme to allow the fastest and safest weight loss possible.

In this way we can ensure that the pet remains at its ideal weight for the longest possible time.

The mainstay of our weight loss programme is the use of controlled exercise regimes and also the correction of poor nutrition by the use of various Hill's Prescription Diets (www.myhillspet.com/Weight-Management). In extreme cases appetite suppressants can be used also. At the Links Veterinary Group the Weight Clinic consultations are free of charge with the only costs being those of foods or drugs being dispensed at the time.
