Mobility and Pain Clinic
These clinics are aimed at those of our patients experiencing chronic pain from conditions as diverse as osteoarthritis, growing pains in young dogs, slipped discs and inoperable tumours.
Obviously pain control is one of the most important services we can offer pets in our care both the improve the welfare of the individual animals and to allow them to fulfill their role in the family environment.
As detailed in our Obesity Clinic section weight gain can have a severely detrimental effect on the mobility of dogs and cats with chronic joint pain and as such there is considerable overlap between techniques used in these clinics. In other words an overweight dog or cat suffering from arthritis may benefit equally from weight loss and controlling pain using the techniques outlined below.
Dogs and cats suffering from osteoarthritis or growing pains will benefit from specific changes to nutrition which we can advise on, specifically the use of a range of foods produced by Hill's Pet Nutrition. The development of Hill's J/D (www.myhillspet.com/JD/) has proven a huge success with many dogs and cats in our clinics currently experiencing improved mobility and decreased pain levels possibly without the use of pain killers. Equally the use of nutriceuticals such as glucosamine and chondroitin have proved invaluable in many of these cases.
Some patients require the use of long term painkillers or anti-inflammatories to control their symptoms and we have a broad experience using a range of drugs in as safe a way as possible.
Equally we are very proud to have links with the Lothian Rehabilitation Centre where your pet can receive the best treatment whether it be accupuncture, physiotherapy or hydrotherapy all performed by highly trained individuals. Please see the relevent sections in the Lothian Rehabilitation Centre section of the website for information.
In summary whatever the reason that your pet is experiencing chronic discomfort we are confident that our combination of regular check ups and advise with regards pain killers, nutritional support and alternative techniques will have a beneficial effect on his or her quality of life.
