Diabetes Clinic

In common with the human population, both dogs and cats are becoming more likely to develop Diabetes mellitus in recent decades. The direct cause of this is unclear but the increased proportion of our pet population being overweight is a definite risk factor and so weight control is once more of paramount importance in getting to grips with this most difficult of diseases.

If your pet is dagnosed with Diabetes mellitus (sugar Diabetes) then it is always a shock and many owners feel a sense of distress and even despair at the prospect of controlling exactly what their pet eats and also giving once or even twice daily injections of insulin. We can advise and fully train owners in this daunting process. Many owners find that after the initial shock and worry is passed they become instant experts at injecting pets!

Our Diabetes Clincs offer the best chance of controlling your pet's Diabetes to allow them to carry on as normal a lifestyle as possible.

Haddington Vets

The Diabetes Clinic will entail regular check ups with your choice of vet at whichever of our surgeries is convenient to you during which your pet will be monitored to ensure its weight and condition are optimal for long term diabetes control. Advise will be given on the best nutritional management to avoid the wild swings in blood sugar which can be a complicating feature of Diabetes and can make long term control very difficult. Our vets will also ensure insulin injections are going well and may also advise that blood glucose levels be checked along with any other blood tests which may be relevent at the time of check up.
