Our People

Links Vet Group is one of the largest vet practices in Scotland, with a total of 10 veterinary surgeons.

All of our vets are multi disciplined, meaning we can offer continuity of care and case supervision. In addition, each vet has individual areas of interest and where appropriate, referral to a colleague may be offered.

I qualified from Edinburgh University in 1989, and following spells in mixed practice in Forres, and equine practice in Leicestershire, I settled in East Lothian at Links Vet group in 1993.

A partner since 1998, my main role is in Practice Development, and I am currently project managing our new hospital facility in Haddington, and the Rehabilitation Centre alongside it.

I do retain an active role within the clinical side of practice life, and responsibility for the Musselburgh surgery, where I consult and operate regularly each week.

I have retained from my youth my  interest in equine medicine, and in particular, look after our Artificial Insemination programmes. I also maintain regular contact with routine farm work.

The great joy of mixed practice is the variety of work and our work load is so varied that it never becomes repetitive.

At home I have a wife who is a talented artist and undertakes portrait commissions, especially of pets and horses. I have 2 young daughters and a small collection of cats and Border Terriers.

My interests outside work are golf, skiing, hillwalking and wine- not necessarily in that order!

Having left Aberdeen Grammar School in 1978 I graduated from R(D)SVS in Edinburgh in 1983. As a fresh faced youth I spent my first year in a mixed practice in Alfreton, Derbyshire dealing with dairy and beef cattle, sheep and small animals. I developed an early interest in small animal surgery which I have kept for these last 25 years !!!

I came to the this practice when it was called "Bowie, Bell, Barr & Melville" in the June of 1984 and have been here since. I have witnessed the practice change from predominately farm animal to the progressive, mainly small animal practice that it is now. Over the years the Links has become a very well equipped outfit with many modern diagnostic tools such as digital Xray imaging and ultrasound machines.

We are entering a new era with the building of a purpose built hospital which will be perfect for us to promote good health in all animals and to try and encourage pet owners to embrace the that are being initiated by the Links.

At the Links I deal mainly with small animal clients and farm work and when I am not attending to sick animals I run the administrative side of the practice.

My hobbies outside the veterinary practice include golf and skiing - only when I am not operating the "Dad's Taxi" service for my two teenage children.

I graduated from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies (RDSVS) in Edinburgh in 1995 at which time I joined a predominantly large animal and equine practice in rural Aberdeenshire where I stayed for two and a half years.

Subsequent to this I spent a period of time gaining experience in several large practices in the north of England before travelling to Australia for a year to experience a different way of life camping and hiking in the outback, whilst also developing a professional interest in the food and drink available in this part of the world.

In 2000 I was the lucky recipient of a Welcome Trust Studentship back at the RDSVS and spent 4 years there during which time I completed a PhD in gene therapy for lung disease before joining the Links Veterinary Group in 2005.

I became a partner in the Spring of 2007 since which time I have been involved in both the day to day running of the practice as well as taking an active role in the development of several initiatives including this web site to bring more information to the clients of the LVG in the most accessible way. I have a practical interest in internal medicine cases both in small animals and horses.

In my spare time I enjoy slowly renovating both my house and cars and walking my dog Ben both in the local area and further afield. Ben will be well known to clients of the Musselburgh surgery as the scruffy looking dog (he is a boy contrary to popular belief!) who demands attention from everyone who comes to the front desk!
